Description
Summary:Dismantling the arbitrariness of the European perspective of the "others" and promoting new uses of the museum collections from indigenous populations is the purpose of this book that presents a set of articles written by anthropologists about colonial and indigenous museums located in different parts of the world. "The proposal for the formulation of this collective work was first conceived in 2009 after the seminar "Experiencias indigenas com museus e centros culturais" (Indigenous Experiences with Museums and Cultural Centers) held September 15 to 17, 2009 at the Museu Nacional do Rio de Janeiro. The seminar was coordinated by Joao Pacheco de Oliveira and its main objective was the creation and operation of an articulation network between ethnographic museums and indigenous cultural centers, aimed at strengthening indigenous protagonism in the reflection and implementation of proposals for the valorization and dissemination of these cultures. In addition to bringing together indigenous people from different regions of Brazil, the seminar coincided with the the exhibition "Indios: os primeiros brasileiros" (which opened in seven differnt venues over time: Recife, 2006-2007; Fortaleza, 2008; Rio de Janeiro, 2010; Cordoba, Argentina, 2013; Natal, 2014; and Salvador, 2016-2017)."
