Summary:Abstract: This study examines the influence of personal and family background attributes, economic and locational factors, school characteristics and educational experiences, and certain student behaviors and choices on the decision to leave high school be fore graduation. Special attention is given to intergroup differences, attempting to sort out the factors responsible for disparities between male and female and among white, black, and Hispanic dropout rates. These analyses, which empty both the descriptive statistics and the multivariate event-history method, are based on data from the High School and Beyond (HS&B) survey of the sophomore class of 1980
