Description
Summary:Pen and ink drawing of Stonewall Jackson, standing in profile facing left, head turned to 3/4 view, image height 7.5 cm, legs and feet completed in outline only, with trial sketch of upper face above; and two proofs of an etching based on the drawing
Item Description:Formed part of lot 110 in Sotheby's sale 5301, 27 Mar. 1985, "Printed and manuscript Americana from the collection of Mrs. Philip D. Sang"; Sotheby's description refers only to "an original sketch of Stonewall Jackson attributed to Volck", with no mention of the etchings or typescript. An accompanying Maury Bromsen note states, "Sale 5301 Lot 110 Purchased with a copy of Phila ca. 1882 Porter & Coates album."
The drawing is on a sheet with watermark "WHAT<MAN> / <T>URKEY M<ILL> / 1860". One of the proofs is on a sheet of mouldmade wove paper 22 x 18 cm., the other on a sheet of heavier and now somewhat darker wove paper 26 x 23 cm
The etching is reproduced in G.M. Anderson, The work of Adalbert Johann Volck 1828-1912 (1970), p. [53], with facing note: "In a letter written years later to a Baltimore lady, Volck described how he took a pencil and hurriedly made a sketch of Jackson. Later he made an etching and a few copies were struck. In 1898 for the Great Confederate Bazaar in Baltimore, more were struck from the original plate and sold." It has not been ascertained whether the typed note accompanying the drawing is a transcript of that letter "to a Baltimore lady", for which Anderson provides no reference. It may well have been addressed to Bessie Johnston Gresham (Mrs. Thomas Baxter Gresham) ca. 1900; Volck corresponded with her and sent her other prints in that year, and the date is consistent with the plate having been found shortly before 1898 and subsequently lost
